More Capital Punishment
1 | AFGHANISTAN
Taliban militants launched yet another audacious raid in Kabul, targeting a clutch of important government buildings as well as the U.S. embassy. At least 27 people were killed, including 11 insurgents. Afghan officials and U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker pinned the Sept. 13 assault, which lasted 20 hours, on the network of the al-Qaeda-affiliated warlord Jalaluddin Haqqani. The shoot-out was the third in as many months in the same heavily fortified section of Kabul, raising real doubts about security in the country as the U.S. looks to draw down its presence.
