    Every once in a while the coupling of X and Y chromosomes goes awry and an XY pairing wrongly results in a female. Now, in a study of such intersex individuals, researchers have discovered a genetic switch that appears to determine just how faithfully XX and XY pairings result in the appropriate sex.

    Churchgoing people tend to be happier and more satisfied than their areligious peers--but why? A new survey finds that the key to their sanguine disposition may have more to do with friends than faith. People who attend religious services and have rich networks of church-based friends reported more life satisfaction than those who go to church but have few or no friends in the congregation.
