The Navy makes a crude attempt to avert ecological disaster

The New Carissa ran aground last Thursday near Coos Bay, Ore., and is now leaking oil across the coastline. Naval attempts to set the freighter on fire to prevent a potentially disastrous oil spill have been unsuccessful.
