Inestimable Executions
In 2009, Chinese authorities likely executed thousands of people--more than any other country--according to an Amnesty International report published March 30. The human-rights organization said it was unable to give an exact figure, citing China's "lack of transparency," and it called on the government to end its secrecy surrounding capital trials and state executions. China was one of 18 countries Amnesty listed as "known to have carried out executions" in the past year. Iran executed at least 388 people, Iraq at least 120 and Saudi Arabia at least 69.
