Some time between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. last Tuesday, Jochen Wolf quietly slit both of his wrists in the prison cell he shared with three other men. Nearly four liters of blood — practically all a man has in him — leaked out of his veins and into his mattress, then onto the floor below, taking with it all awareness of pain. Doctors say he was minutes from death when one of his cellmates awoke at 7 a.m.
