The only thing built during the three-and-a-half-year siege of Sarajevo between May 1992 and November 1996 was a tunnel — a tunnel that saved some 400,000 citizens from starvation, military defeat, and total Serb occupation.

Today, this famous tunnel — one entrance to which sits proudly in the cellar of a private home — is destined to become an official monument to the city's survival.
