The judgment itself runs 200 pages, but it took less than a minute for presiding Judge Lord Cullen to read out the court's final verdict: "We have reached the conclusion that none of the grounds of appeal is well founded," he said. "The appeal is therefore refused."

Upon hearing that al-Megrahi's conviction and life sentence stand, his wife broke down in tears and, wailing, was led out of the courtroom to spend the last hours with her husband before his transfer to a high-security Scottish prison. Families of the victims were also in tears, many hugging each other after almost 14 years of legal wrangling finally came to a close.
