The economic reforms are even extending to Italy's bloated bureaucracy. Deputies last week debated legislation to eliminate many useless, semi-autonomous state agencies. No one knows how many there are. "They are like the stars in the night sky," says Liberal Deputy Aldo Bozzi, whose own estimate is 55,000. There is, for instance, the "agency for the assistance of war orphans," the last of whom is by now 30 years old, and the "agency for the world exposition of 1942," which was never held because of World War II.
