Much of Schwarz's business is done by mail; the store mails out 500,000 of its catalogues each year, once received a single mail order for $4,800 worth of toys. Schwarz takes its world of toys as seriously as a five-year-old on Christmas morning. Says former President Philip Kirkham, who retired last year but still spends much of his time at the store: "There is nothing more disastrous for a child than a shoddy toy that falls apart. It can destroy his confidence. Toys, you see, are life in miniature."
