Stearns summed up the education of his era when he wrote: "We don't believe in miracles saving us ... even the miracle of everybody being supported by the Government. . . . We have been jolted back to problems demanding essentially the same kind of courage that faced the old Pilgrims three centuries ago. ... I know of no magic shortcut to wisdom. But I do know of a quick road to folly—the road of suppression, of fear of new ideas, of unwillingness to experiment ... of accepting our economic evils docilely. . . . We may have sinned again and again against the light, but we are still the children of it."
