Eisenhower's invaluable chief of staff during the campaign, New Hampshire's Governor Sherman Adams, was considered for Secretary of Commerce, but wound up as Assistant to the President, a job in which he would be as close to Eisenhower as he was during the campaign.

Republicans—and a lot of Democrats —greeted the appointments enthusiastically. Particularly well received: Wilson, Brownell. European reaction to the Dulles appointment was predictably jittery, because European diplomats fear Dulles may be too "dynamic," upset the good old status quo and pay more attention to Asia than to Europe.
