City Collects $4,000 in Fines By Enforcing Ban on Sagging Pants
The fashion police have been making big bucks in Albany, Ga. Over the span of a year, the southwestern Georgia town collected nearly $4,000 in fines from people charged with violating an ordinance banning the wearing of clothes below their waistlines, or exposing undergarments. First-time offenders were given a $25 fine. Repeat offenders faced fines to the tune of $200.
Nearly 187 citations have been issued since the law took effect in November, 2010. Civil liberty advocates have their shorts in a knot over it, but the success of the Albany law has led other towns in Georgia to enact similar bans.
