Iran's Women's Soccer Team's Modest Uniforms

The Iranian women's soccer team was already suited up and on the field for their June match against Jordan when the referee announced that they would be forced to disqualify due to their conservative uniforms. In keeping with Islamic tradition, the players were wearing their standard kits, consisting of long-sleeved shirts, headscarves and long pants. This time, however, the team was told that their uniforms didn't meet FIFA regulations. As the rules state: "Players and officials shall not display political, religious, commercial or personal messages or slogans in any language or form on their playing or team kits." It was a heartbreaking moment for the players, especially because the match was a necessary step toward qualifying for the 2012 Olympics. With FIFA refusing to change its rules, it appears that the Iranian women will not be attending the Games anytime in the near future.
