9. The Berndt Brothers
In April, 48-year-old twins Edwin and Edward Berndt were charged with felony murder after police discovered their mother's body covered in bugs in their Houston home. A neighbor reportedly told authorities she hadn't seen Sybil Berndt in months, and when police arrived at the house, it was in "deplorable condition and smelled terribly," with large amounts of flies seen on the curtains. Sybil, 88, was found facedown on the floor. Her sons told investigators they were watching the NCAA football championship game on Jan. 10 when she walked in, slipped and fell. They said they left her on the floor and that she was conscious and talking for three days until she died. According to police, the twins continued to live in the home, stepping over their mother's body. But last month, a grand jury dropped the murder charges against the twins. According to their defense attorney, the brothers, one of whom has a form of autism called Asperger's syndrome and the other being "so mentally disabled that he really isn't functional," never should have been arrested in the first place.
