Two months after the worst oil spill in U.S. history, Congressman Henry Waxman kicked off the grilling by calling out the company at fault, saying that "BP's corporate complacency is astonishing" and that it "cut corner after corner," eventually making the Gulf of Mexico pay the price. Although he appeared contrite, Hayward could not avoid the wrath of the House Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee. After nearly an hour and a half of opening statements by members of the committee, Hayward read his prepared statement and then a break was called. Upon his return, the real grilling began. Members of Congress peppered Hayward with questions, but it seemed they only wanted one thing: for Hayward to take full responsibility for the accident. Hayward stuck to his line, though, repeatedly saying, "I'm not prepared to draw conclusions about this accident until such time as the investigation is concluded."
