Roku Streaming Media Box

Since its launch in 2008, this so-called cable killer has more than earned its reputation: needing little more than a TV and an Internet connection, the tiny, unobtrusive and inexpensive Roku box lets the family enjoy more than 100,000 movies and TV shows from services like Netflix and Hulu.

You'll have to subscribe to some of those streaming services separately, but after a one-time start-up cost for the Roku box — the basic model starts at $60; the high-end one tops out at $100 — it's still a lot cheaper than paying for cable. There's plenty of free content available too.
