The Blizzard of January 1996
This northeaster pummeled numerous states including Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey and New York in early January 1996. Measurements taken in Central Park found that more than 20 in. (50 cm) of snow had fallen there during the two-day storm. The largest amount of snow accumulation — 4 ft. (1 m) — occurred in the not-so-northeast state of West Virginia. The storm, with winds of 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h) in some places, caused roughly $3 billion in damage, extensive power outages and headaches for those still traveling back from holiday vacations.
