Fast-Food Dada

Say this for the fast-food industry: it hasn't taken the changes in American eating habits lying down. In a profoundly American stroke of marketing genius, it's gone countercultural, making weirder, gaudier, more gruesomely unhealthy creations than the industry's franchising forebears ever dreamed of. A bacon and cheese sandwich made with two fried chicken breasts? Check. A 2,530-calorie "pizza burger" 9½ in. wide? Check. How about a burger between two grilled-cheese sandwiches? Is that insane enough? For KFC, Burger King and Friendly's, apparently not. When we look back, 2010 will go down as the year fast food encountered surrealism — and the result was delicious!
