An Old Feud Reignited in California

Jerry Brown, the Democrat in California's gubernatorial race, just couldn't seem to shake the past. Baited by an ad from his opponent using footage from his bitter 1992 presidential primary against Bill Clinton, Brown was videotaped at a Sept. 12 campaign event lashing out at the former President. "I mean, Clinton's a nice guy," Brown mused. "But whoever said he always told the truth?" Referencing both the topic of Meg Whitman's ad and the Monica Lewinsky scandal, Brown added insult to injury, quipping to the jeering crowd, "I did not have taxes with this state." After a flurry of less-than-flattering press coverage and the obligatory mea culpa, Brown and Clinton patched things up. Proving that a tough election can be a salve to old wounds, the two men campaigned together on Oct.15.
