Nikita Khrushchev

Week of Oct. 1, 1990
TIME publishes excerpts of Nikita Khrushchev's taped memoirs. The former Soviet leader, after being driven from power, recalls falling under suspicion in the Stalin era. Khrushchev also reveals that Stalin expected Hitler to break the nonaggression pact signed in 1939, and he blamed Stalin for not preparing adequately to fight.
