Pan Am Flight 103

Week of Jan. 2, 1989
Pan Am Flight 103 is blown from the skies above Lockerbie, Scotland after leaving Frankfurt for New York City. All 258 passengers and crew aboard are killed, along with 22 people on the ground. Investigators suspect terrorism, in light of previous warnings to a U.S. diplomatic facility in Europe that a Pan American flight would be bombed.
