Egypt's Gamal Abdel Nasser embargoes the Gulf of Aqaba to all Israeli vessels and other ships carrying "strategic" cargo to the Israeli port of Eilat. President Johnson declares, "I wish to say what three Presidents have said before: that the U.S. is firmly committed to the support of the political independence and territorial integrity of all the nations of the area."
