Robert Mitchum Does Time
Just a few years after he was nominated for an Oscar for his supporting role in The Story of G.I. Joe, Robert Mitchum was arrested and convicted for conspiracy to possess marijuana. TIME reported on the scandal surrounding the "sleepy-eyed cinemactor" in 1948, complete with a footnote explaining what marijuana was. In 1949 Mitchum was sentenced to two months in jail and two years of probation, which only complimented his rebel persona. He served time on an honor farm — he said it was "like Palm Springs without the riff-raff" — but after his probation, the conviction was expunged.
