Ukraine's Bare-Breasted Feminists
Ukrainian activist group Femen has good intentions, like protesting the prolonged political mudslinging that hampered Ukrainian politics for months (see President Viktor Yushchenko vs. Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko). There's also the group's commitment to fighting prostitution in the country, where 1 in 8 prostitutes is college or high-school age. These are important causes. But then come their protests, which seem to demean the entire reason for their getting up in arms. The protest against political mudslinging included a bevy of bikini-clad women thrown into a mud pit. Another had the women dressing up as nurses with backpacks full of syringes and protesting in front of the Turkish embassy in Kiev, a symbolic gesture of trying to "cure foreigners' sex addiction." They've protested sexual harassment by professors by simulating said harassment (pictured). The women are also well known for baring their breasts for various reasons, including as a welcome to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in July. Huh? But as Anna Hutsol, one of the founders of Femen, put it, "If we were to run around dressed in baggy clothes, no one would pay any attention to us." Mission accomplished.
