The Rite of Spring (Cleveland Orchestra)

The Cleveland Orchestra starts the fall with spring. Franz Welser-Möst — who becomes the General Music Director of the Vienna State Opera this year — opens his eighth season as music director in Cleveland with a late-career work by Toru Takemitsu (Dream/Window, 1985), followed by the Bach Mass in F major. The second half of the program features well-known 20th Century works from demure Debussy (Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun) to throbbing and rowdy Stravinsky (The Rite of Spring). Taken over all, it's a seasonal tasting menu of the breadth of the orchestra's abilities (and its distinctive "Cleveland Sound") in the vibrant acoustics of its Severance Hall home. 9/23-9/25
