At Home: A Short History of Private Life by Bill Bryson

Bryson has a curious aptitude for discovering the fascinating in the mundane — it's as if he were congenitally incapable of being bored. At Home is "a history of the world without leaving home": touring the rooms of his Victorian house in rural England, he delves into the surprisingly interesting origins of ordinary objects, from forks to lamps to salt to dining room tables to toilets. 10/5
