John McCain and the 'Danged Fence'
People just don't use the word danged much anymore. Arizona Senator John McCain is no stranger to salty language — he was in the Navy, after all — but it's still jarring to hear him say it in this TV spot. Once an outspoken advocate for immigration reform that included a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, McCain has changed his tune in recent years. His tough primary fight against conservative challenger J.D. Hayworth only stoked his fiery rhetoric, and this ad's exhortation to "complete the danged fence" drives home that about-face. Add in the Senator's use of an adjective we thought had long gone the way of daggum, doggone and goldurned, and you've got to ask yourself: What in tarnation is going on with John McCain?
