The Amish School Shootings
On Oct. 2 at West Nickel Mines School, a one-room Amish schoolhouse in Lancaster County, Penn., a man in a baseball cap came to the door, holding a shotgun. He ordered everyone out but the female students. The police arrived within 10 minutes but the man opened fire, shooting all of the girls and then himself. Two died on the scene and three more in the hospital. The gunman was identified as Charles Carl Roberts IV, a truck driver and father of 3 who lived nearby. His wife returned home that morning to find suicide notes. "We must not think evil of this man," said a grandfather of one of the murdered Amish girls, according to CNN. They have since set up a charitable fund for Roberts' family and razed the school building. In its place is a quiet pasture.
