Bush the Elder Invites Dana Carvey to the White House
George H.W. Bush spent his 1992 reelection campaign in a state of agitation. He was bothered by the fact that he even had to sit through a debate with Bill Clinton, a man he viewed as a draft-dodger. So he famously checked his watch. But after the '92 vote resulted in a Clinton victory, Bush spent his last days in office confronting the man who had haunted him well before the charming governor from Arkansas arrived on the scene. At that winter's White House Christmas party, Bush invited his doppelganger — Dana Carvey — to take part in the tinsel. Playing Bush on Saturday Night Live, Carvey helped create the image of Bush as the type of man who said things like, "It wouldn't be prudent at this juncture."When a man claiming to be the president called the Secret Service from the Lincoln bedroom on the night of the '92 Christmas Party requesting protection for a naked midnight run, it was probably understood who was on the line.
