Fritz Henderson, GM's holdover chief executive officer, abruptly resigns after failing to obtain a vote of confidence from GM's board of directors. Henderson says he no longer had the authority needed to run GM's day-to-day operations. Chairman Ed Whitacre starts a search for a new CEO but soon decides to keep the job himself and promotes younger executives from within GM's ranks.
