Coney Island Mermaid Parade (Brooklyn, N.Y.)

Founded in 1983, this ocean-themed summer kickoff is a tribute to the Mardi Gras parades held around Brooklyn's Coney Island from 1903 to 1954. Participants' homemade costumes run the gamut from mermaids to lighthouses. Celebrities step up each year to fill the roles of King Neptune and Queen Mermaid; Queen Latifah, Moby and Harvey Keitel have all made cameos in the past. This year's parade, on June 19, will feature Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson.
