Phillip Garrido
In 1977, after kidnapping and raping a 25-year-old woman, Phillip Garrido was sentenced to 50 years-to-life in prison. Since he was convicted before Congress had passed its "truth in sentencing" laws, which prohibit the release of an inmate before they have served a majority of the sentence, Garrido was released from federal prison in 1988 — after having served just over a decade. Less than three years later he kidnapped 11-year-old Jaycee Dugard and held her hostage for 18 years. During her captivity Dugard bore Garrido two daughters, 11 and 15 at the time of her reappearance. Despite being on parole and receiving regular visits by parole officers, he concealed Dugard's captivity, hiding her in a concealed area behind his home in Antioch, California. This time around, with Garrido and his wife, Nancy, facing 29 counts of kidnapping and rape, he may not be let loose quite as easily.
