By far the biggest foreign contributor to the Afghanistan campaign, the U.S. concentrates on counter-insurgency operations, peacekeeping and reconstruction. President Obama has staked his first term on defeating the Taliban, or at least making parts of the country safe enough that Afghanistan's government and burgeoning business sector can operate.
