MSI Wind U123

For less than the price of a 64 GB iPod Touch, this $315 netbook makes for a cheap backup computer for traveling. In addition to the usual ports, 10-inch screen and Windows XP software, the Wind includes handy software for the built-in 1.3 megapixel webcam. You can use it to log into the computer with your face rather than a forgettable password. The Wind doesn't feel as sturdy as the Samsung or Dell netbooks, and it's weighted toward the back so it tips over easily when sitting on your lap. Before I even booted up the MSI for the first time, one of the little rubber feet on its bottom fell off. The trackpad buttons also feel a bit flimsy. On the software side, the Wind runs efficiently. Software and Web pages load just as quickly on the Wind as they do on other, pricier laptops. If you're looking for a cheap option for basic software use and Web access on the road, the Wind is an affordable, if less attractive, alternative to other leading netbooks.
