The House
No one is predicting Democratic gains in the House in 2010. The only question is how many seats Democrats will lose. In 1994 Republicans gained 54 seats to win control of the House of Representatives for the first time in decades. In 2010 Republicans are shooting for a gain of 41 seats, a long-shot possibility. But over the coming months, the outlook could darken even further for Democrats, especially if the economy continues to struggle. The National Republican Congressional Committee has announced a target list of 70 Democratic members. Political handicapper Charlie Cook points out that 48 Democrats come from districts that voted for both George W. Bush in 2004 and McCain in 2008. There are also 54 Democratic seats that were held by Republicans just four years ago. From the eastern shore of Maryland (Representative Frank Kratovil) to the high planes of Colorado (Representative Betsy Markey) to the suburbs of Orlando, Fla. (Representative Alan Grayson), many Democrats are expecting hard-fought battles next year.
