Take a Bite Outta Crime

The trench coat–sporting pooch known as McGruff the Crime Dog first appeared in 1980 on behalf of the National Crime Prevention Council. In 2006, he joined the fight against cybercrime with the website ByteCrime.org. And it didn't stop there. Now he even has his own blog. But while he remains one of the government's most recognizable mascots, that didn't stop a Washington, D.C., transit employee from punching his lights out. In March 2009, a bus driver was fired after assaulting an off-duty cop dressed up as the canine character.
