Don't Cry for Me, America

On Earth Day 1971, the Keep America Beautiful organization introduced an antipollution campaign starring Iron Eyes Cody, a Native American actor who earned the nickname "the Crying Indian" for the single tear he shed as he gazed upon a litter-strewn landscape. Ironically, Cody had initially turned down the job because, as he put it, "'Indians don't cry." The tear, it turns out, was glycerin.
