Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis
Founded in 1963, the Guthrie has long been a beacon of quality theater in the Midwest. There's still time to catch its revival of When We Are Married by British playwright J.B. Priestley. Although he's remembered mostly for his social-issue dramas, like An Inspector Calls, Priestley also had a lighter, satiric side — as in this comedy, set in 1908, in which three couples learn their 25-year-old marriages aren't legal, meaning they've been living in sin all their veddy respectable lives. The Guthrie's second, more intimate stage is offering Ella, a life story of Ella Fitzgerald — told mostly in song, naturally — that's been touring regional theaters for several years. Dinner-and-a-show types might like to check out the theater's new Sea Change restaurant; its menu is by Tim McKee, the James Beard Award-winning chef of La Belle Vie, one of Minneapolis' highest-rated eateries.
