David Bowie / Ziggy Stardust

David Bowie's rock-god alter ego, Ziggy Stardust, remains the enduring image of the glam-rock era. Sporting a flaming red mullet, Bowie took to answering to Ziggy's name during the early '70s and renamed his backing band the Spiders from Mars. "Ziggy was my Martian messiah who twanged a guitar," Bowie said. Bowie called Ziggy a way to explore his massive celebrity during his first U.S. tour, but by 1974, the character's time in the spotlight was largely up.
