Illinois

If you're thinking of hatching a diabolical plan to take over the world, you may want to do it in a town other than Metropolis. The Illinois burg is Superman's hometown (according to DC Comics and a 1972 resolution passed by the state legislature), and monuments to the Man of Steel are everywhere. On Superman Square, you'll find a 15-ft. statue of the hero, and just down the street a Super Museum. It houses 20,000 Superman items, including movie props, toys and comic books. Each summer the town also hosts a Superman festival. Somewhere, Batman is feeling inadequate. Museum admission: $5
