3. "Straight Up" by Paula Abdul

Local radio carried more weight in 1989. Despite Paula Abdul's record company Virgin deciding to promote her song "(It's Just) the Way You Love Me", a station in San Francisco felt that "Straight Up" was a better example of Abdul's talent. And history would prove them right as her label abandoned its support and turned to "Straight Up" straight away. The track went to number one and was followed by more chart toppers from the Forever Your Girl album. Quirky stat: celebrated film maker David Fincher directed the promo video for this song. Wonder if that's still on his resumé?
