1. "Another Day in Paradise" by Phil Collins

In which the British singer/songwriter attempted to bring the sensitive subject matter of homelessness to the world ("She calls out to the man on the street/ Sir, can you help me? It's cold and I've nowhere to sleep"). There had been nothing in Collins's canon of work to suggest this song was in the offing ... there's been nothing like it by him since. Twelve years later, R&B stars Brandy & Ray J covered it for the Collins tribute album Urban Renewal, allowing hipsters the improbable opportunity to listen to the seven minute long "Another Day in Paradise" Black Legend vs. J-Reverse Club Mix. There wasn't much chance of that sentence being written during his Genesis days.
