Earthquake Hits the World Series
Sports Illustrated's headline summed it up: the day the World Series stopped. The west coast affair between the Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants was abruptly halted on October 17 by the Loma Prieta earthquake. Occurring at the start of Game 3, it caused a 10-day disruption in play and gave headline writers the opportunity to rename the 1989 World Series the "Earthquake Series" ("Bay Bridge Series" or "The Battle of the Bay" just doesn't do it justice).
As for matters on the field, the A's would sweep the Giants in one of the most one-sided contests ever seen in baseball history: Oakland led for all but two innings of the four-game sweep, and San Francisco never held the lead. It's fair to conclude that the A's weren't exactly quaking in their boots.
