Anti Americanism
Surely the Eurovision couldn't be a hotbed for anti-American sentiment? Mais oui. In 1981, at the beginning of Ronald Reagan's presidency, Luxembourg's uncharacteristically scrappy entry was a song in French called "Maybe It Isn't America (Because America Isn't the Be-All)". The tune didn't dazzle the juries, only finishing in 11th place. But the U.S. isn't the only nation to incur Eurovision's wrath: the following year, at the height of the Falklands War, Spain's provocative entry was a performance of the tango — practically the national dance of Argentina. The choice surely would have irked the U.K., that year's Eurovision hosts (and the Falklands conflict's eventual winners) if it had been any good. Sadly for Spain, the dramatic dance came in 10th.
