A Flying, Not to Mention Pregnant, Nun

Tucked away in the production notes of The Flying Nun — a show ripe for satirizing, centered as it was on the adventures of an airborne nun in a convent in Puerto Rico — is even more fodder for lampoonery. Sally Field's impish character, Sister Bertrille, was not only a stalwart of celibacy, but ethereal enough to take flight at the tilt of her heavily starched cornette. During the filming of the show's third and final season, when Field developed a noticeable baby bump, pregnant flights of fancy were obviously not written into the already unusual premise of the show. Instead, the producers relied on props and scenery to block view of Field's body below the chest.
