Mahmoud Darwish, 1942-2008

'I have learned and dismantled all the words in order to draw from them a single word: Home.'

Born in the village of al-Birwa in western Galilee, he wrote poems about displacement, memory and desire that made him the unofficial voice of Palestine. After his death in a Texas hospital, he was buried next to Ramallah's Palace of Culture, overlooking Jerusalem.
