The infamous snowstorm of December 2010, dubbed #snowpocalypse in the Twitterverse, brought much of New York City to a halt for the better part of three days. But across the river in New Jersey, things were moving along a little faster, in no small part because of Newark Mayor Cory Booker. The politician turned his Twitter handle into an online help hotline, responding directly to residents' requests. At one point, Booker showed up at a mother's front door to deliver an emergency supply of diapers after learning the snow had prevented her from going to the store. The mayor's personable and funny dispatches "Lift with your Knees!!' I think I left part of my back back there," read one tweet were in stark contrast to the slow, sterile response from New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg and helped make the already savvy Booker (his reality show, Brick City, is in its second season on the Sundance Channel) into a social-media superhero.
