Widely considered a flop in the U.S. market, the LaserDisc format eventually led to the compact disc that's still used today to store photos, music, videos and more. Invented and developed by Time Warner, Sony, Toshiba and Philips, the DVD format can store up to 17 GB of data or your run-of-the-mill Hollywood blockbuster plus a few extras. Waiting in the wings to replace the DVD is the Blu-ray format, which can store upwards of 128 GB of data. If only popular forms of media weren't shifting to the cloud.
