Released in 2006 with 8 GB of memory and retailing for $300, the wi-fi-enabled Gremlin MG-1000 was the first portable MP3 player with the ability to download music over a wi-fi network without the use of a host computer. You could even connect with other Gremlin owners and share music over wireless connections, including ad hoc networks. Apple did not debut such functionality until 2007. MusicGremlin was acquired by SanDisk in 2008 and hasn't been heard from since.
