The men who would become known as the "Texas Seven" escaped from a maximum-security prison on Dec. 13, 2000, and proceeded to rob several businesses before killing Aubrey Hawkins, a police officer responding to a burglary, on Christmas Eve.
Authorities offered a reward, and the search for the men was repeatedly broadcast on America's Most Wanted. Not long after AMW's Jan. 20, 2001, show, a tip came in from a couple who owned an RV park in Colorado, who said they believed the escaped convicts had taken up residence. Four of the seven were arrested on Jan. 22, 2001; two more were caught on Jan. 24. The remaining escapee committed suicide. All six survivors, including reported ringleader George Rivas, were sentenced to death for the Hawkins murder; one of them was executed in 2008.
